Councillor Graham Oakes selected as Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Bridgwater

Councillor Graham Oakes has been unanimously chosen by local members as the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Bridgwater at the next general election. The Liberal Democrats finished 6,500 votes behind the Conservatives in Bridgwater in 2024, and the party is now aiming to build on its growing support across Somerset.

Graham Oakes is a well‑known Somerset councillor, serving on Somerset Council. Until May 2026, he held a senior role on Somerset Council with responsibility for Public Health, Climate Change and the Environment, leading key initiatives to improve local services and strengthen community resilience.

Speaking after his selection, Graham said:

“It is a huge privilege to be selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Bridgwater. Since the last general election, we have been out in our towns and villages, listening to residents and showing that there is a positive alternative. Bridgwater is the only constituency in Somerset not yet represented by a Liberal Democrat MP and I am determined to change that. I will work closely with councillors and our candidates ahead of the May council elections next year.”

He added:

“Residents tell me they want a representative who will focus on the issues affecting them day to day. I am campaigning on tackling the cost of living, supporting local businesses to revitalise our high streets, protecting our NHS and improving access to healthcare. I will work tirelessly to be a strong voice for every community across the Bridgwater constituency.”

Graham and his wife are both nurses and manage care homes specialising in dementia care. They have four children and one grandchild. A lifelong Yeovil Town FC supporter, Graham is also passionate about local history and cookery — though he admits he is far more enthusiastic than talented in the kitchen.
